RVing on the Information Highway

RVers everywhere are flocking to the web as an easy way to maintain contact with family, friends, and finances. Technology has made it possible to send mail, conduct business, plan trips, gather information, and perform a host of other useful RV activities. Armed with a few pieces of knowledge, RVers can perfectly blend their lifestyle with Internet use.
The world of technology seems to move at the speed of light, and there's no indication it will ever slow to a reasonable pace. In less than two years the average person has had to contend with email, voicemail, and Hotmail; most own a cell phone, home phone, car phone-and it is hard to even think about living without them.
With the amount of new technologies being unleashed on consumers today, it is getting difficult to figure out what is useful, and what is not. Welcome to the age of information overload. If you don't know your ISP from your POP, or your AOL from your AIM, you are not alone. Confusing or not, Internet access is quickly becoming a necessity rather than a novelty. The Internet offers a wealth of useful information and research opportunities for us, and the time and money saved by using the Internet for such tasks, such as staying in touch with people or banking, is incredible. Why wait on hold for the "next available representative" when you can point, click, and get the information you want right away.
As wonderful as this may sound, the RVing lifestyle makes convenient Internet access something of a challenge. The following are some different ways you can access the Internet when you don't have a permanent address.
  • Direct Satellite Internet
The "Cadillac" of all Internet access. A direct satellite link is the equivalent of having the Internet beamed to your RV by satellite, allowing you to access the web from almost anywhere. Systems, which combine your Direct TV with a Direct PC, are also catching on, allowing you to receive your TV and Internet signals with the same dish. Although the front-end costs associated with Direct Satellite Internet are currently high, this may eventually become the preferred method of Internet access for RVers nationwide. However, if you don't spend a lot of time in remote locations, then there are some cheaper alternatives to consider.
  • Cellular Phones
With many companies eliminating roaming and long distance charges, connecting a cell phone to a computer's modem is one method of choice for RVers who want to avoid the hassle of finding a phone jack. Some companies offer thousands of minutes per month at a rate comparable to an average household phone bill, so it's no wonder that many people use their cell phone as their only phone. Ask your cellular provider for information about connecting your laptop or PC to your cell phone.
  • Campgrounds with Internet Access
Web-based email systems such as Hotmail, Yahoo, and MailCity allow you to create an email account on their website and check it from any computer with web access, free of charge. Although many campgrounds offer computers for their guests, most provide only a computer or two for camper use. Check your campground directory for "modem-friendly" RV parks and campgrounds. Many sites, such as the Escapees Rainbow parks, will provide you with a phone jack right on your hook-up. With your own jack, you'll have your connection at your own convenience. This is by far the easiest method of connecting to the Internet when it's available. A large number of Internet service providers (ISPs) have toll-free numbers that you can use to connect-an obvious benefit for RVers.
  • Alternative Resources
You can also take advantage of resources outside of the RV park. Libraries, universities, and community centers often offer access for little or no charge. Businesses such as Kinko's and other copy centers usually offer high-speed access for a small charge as well.
